One of the best things about having a space like the Corcoran is the opportunity to bring together area artists, art-lovers, and culture seekers. This Saturday, November 2, the Corcoran will do just that with its annual Community Day art fair.
This FREE celebration of art and creativity invites community members to engage with the best of what the Corcoran has to offer, with a variety of activities and events throughout the day:
Take the hands-on approach and flex your artistic muscles with demonstrations including Cyanotype Printing and 3-D Printing; workshops in which you can make a Ceramic Bowl to
benefit So Others Might Eat (SOME) or try your hand at Printmaking; and an Upcycled Art Making activity inspired by artist Mia Feuer and her NOW at the Corcoran exhibition, An Unkindness. Bring your own plastic bottles & bags and create an Anacostia River catfish or contribute to an outdoor plastic wheat field installation.
Taking over the Corcoran’s Atrium is a juried Community Art Fair, featuring fine arts and crafts made by local artists. Get a jump on holiday gifts for friends and family, or pick up something for yourself at this unique pop-up style shop. Swing by the Corcoran Shop as well, for a variety of art inspired and exhibition-related goodies.
We want to hear from you! Contribute to our newly launched Corcoran Stories Project, by sharing your Corcoran memories, experiences, stories, and photographs with us. Every day our purpose as a museum and college is animated by the people that come through our doors, and the stories, ideas, and moments they create with us and with each other.
Short films made by Corcoran ArtReach students and community partners explore the themes of borders, boundaries, and identities. Inspired and guided by the work of documentarian Marco Vera, a recent Corcoran Artist-in-Residence, these films will be shown throughout the day in a Film Festival format.
LISTEN & LEARN
Enjoy tunes throughout the day as we share a Playlist carefully selected for you by Washington City Paper editors and writers. Hop on a Collection Highlights Tour to learn about some of the many masterpieces in the Corcoran’s collection. Community Day also marks the opening of the newest NOW at the Corcoran exhibition, Mia Feuer: An Unkindness (behind-the-scenes of the exhibition here). In addition to exploring the exhibition, visitors
are invited to hear more from the artist herself at one of two Artist Talks (10:30am and 2pm). Then take a turn around the synthetic black ice skating rink that has been installed in the Corcoran’s Rotunda as part of the exhibition.
The Corcoran College of Art + Design will also be on-hand on Community Day! If you are interested in learning more about our Graduate Degree programs, join faculty, staff, and students
for a Graduate Open House event taking place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m (RSVP here). The event will include degree program information and staff introductions, financial aid information, and refreshments.
EAT & DRINK
While all art-making activities are perfect for any age, there is one particular offering for adults only. Take a break and enjoy a brew at our Beer Garden, sponsored by Muse Café. Samples and tastings will be available throughout the afternoon. Anyone looking to refuel can grab a market-fresh bite from Todd Gray’s Muse at the Corcoran.
Doors open at 10 a.m. and no registration is required. All activities are FREE! More information here.
